Atkinsons has been making perfume in London since 1799, back when it supplied the royal court, and Amber Empire is the house at its most unapologetically imperial. Maurice Roucel built it around amber and vanilla, then ran oolong tea through the middle and finished it with myrrh, sandalwood and incense. The result smells like a wood-panelled room in a very old, very expensive building.
Why you will love this amber eau de toilette
Roucel is one of the great perfumers, and this is a masterclass in making something rich without making it heavy. The tea note is the key — it cuts through the vanilla and amber with a dry, slightly smoky bitterness that stops the whole thing from turning into dessert. It reads as grown-up and expensive from the very first spray.
- Amber and vanilla treated seriously — warm and resinous, not sugary
- Oolong tea in the middle gives it a dry, sophisticated bitterness
- Myrrh and incense base adds a smoky, almost ceremonial depth
- Big 100 ml bottle from a house with two hundred years of history
- Unisex, and one of the most wearable ambers for both men and women
- Excellent for winter evenings, weddings and occasions in Cairo
- 100% original Atkinsons London, delivered across Egypt with cash on delivery
The scent
It opens warm and golden — vanilla and amber arriving almost immediately, rich and balsamic, with none of the sharp citrus most fragrances put on top. Then the oolong tea cuts across it: dry, leafy, faintly smoky, and completely unexpected in a scent like this. The base is myrrh, sandalwood and incense — resinous and quietly smoky, giving it a sense of age and weight that very few modern ambers manage.
Who it is for
For anyone who loves amber and vanilla but has outgrown the sweet versions. For collectors who appreciate a perfumer’s signature and want something built by Maurice Roucel. And for evenings and cold weather, where the incense and myrrh have space to open up.
How to use it
Spray two to three times on the neck, chest and inner wrists. Apply to moisturised skin and let it settle without rubbing — the tea note takes a few minutes to come through. One spray on a jacket or scarf keeps the amber trail going into the next day. Store away from heat and sunlight.
