Egypt has a real counterfeit problem in fragrance, and the fakes have got better. They are no longer obvious from the box. This page is what to actually check, and what our own guarantee covers.
How to tell an original from a fake
- The spray, not the bottle. A genuine atomiser gives a fine even mist. Fakes spit, drip, or spray unevenly, because the pump is the hardest part to copy cheaply.
- How it changes over an hour. An original opens, settles and dries down into something different. A fake usually smells the same at minute five and minute sixty, then disappears.
- Batch codes. Original bottles carry a batch code printed or etched on both the box and the bottle, and the two match. Stickers that peel, or a code on only one of them, are a bad sign.
- Liquid colour. Hold it to the light. Cloudiness or sediment does not belong in a sealed new bottle.
- A price that makes no sense. A 100 ml designer bottle at a fifth of the normal price is not a deal that exists.
Why original prices differ between sellers
Two originals can legitimately cost different amounts. Import route, batch year, whether it is a tester or a boxed unit, and exchange rate at the time of purchase all move the price. What is not legitimate is a designer scent priced below what the bottle itself costs to make.
Tester, decant, dupe, fake — they are not the same thing
