Standing in front of the perfume you like, the question is always the same: 15, 30, 50 or 100 ml? And is the big bottle genuinely better value, or is that just a line to get you to spend more?

Short answer: the big bottle is cheaper per millilitre, but it is not always cheaper for you. The gap between those two sentences is what this guide is about, worked out with real prices from the Jmaloo store.

1. Oxidation. Every spray lets air into the bottle. An opened perfume has a practical life of three to five years. If you rotate five fragrances, a 100 ml bottle can sit with you for four years — by which point the scent really has changed.

• Do not shake the bottle; shaking pulls in more air.
• Steady room temperature beats the fridge or the balcony.
