A fake bottle can look almost perfect and still smell like nothing twenty minutes after you spray it. Here is how to check a perfume before you pay for it, and after you open the box.
Why Counterfeits Are Everywhere
Fragrance is one of the easiest products in the world to copy badly. Packaging can be reproduced cheaply, the name on the box sells itself, and most buyers only discover the problem once the scent has already collapsed on their skin. Counterfeiters are not trying to fool a perfume expert. They are trying to survive the ten seconds you spend looking at the box.
Start With the Outer Box
Authentic cartons use thick, rigid cardboard with sharp, even printing. Look closely at the small text: legal notices, ingredient lists and country of origin should be crisp, correctly spelled and properly aligned. Fakes often show slightly fuzzy letters, off colours, visible glue lines and corners that do not fold cleanly. The cellophane on a genuine box is tight and neatly folded, not loose, wrinkled or closed with a strip of tape.
Match the Batch Code
Nearly every genuine fragrance carries a batch code printed or embossed on both the box and the bottle, and the two should match each other. On counterfeits the code is often missing from one of them, added as a sticker, or simply different. A full expiry date in large friendly numbers where the batch code should be is usually a bad sign, because real codes are short and cryptic.
Look at the Bottle and the Cap
Genuine glass feels heavy and looks clear, with no bubbles and no wavy distortion, and the moulding seams are barely noticeable. Labels sit straight and are either printed directly onto the glass or applied without trapped air. The cap has real weight and closes with a firm, consistent click. A cap that wobbles, rattles or has to be forced is a strong warning.
Test the Spray and the Liquid
An authentic atomiser releases a fine, even mist without dripping or spitting. The liquid itself should be clear. Cloudiness, floating particles or an unusually dark colour are red flags. Colour on its own is not proof, since many brands vary the shade slightly between batches, but a fragrance that looks obviously different from the one you remember deserves suspicion.
Then Trust Your Nose
This is the real test. A genuine perfume opens, changes and settles: the first minutes give way to a heart, and then to a base that stays close to the skin for hours. A copy usually starts with a sharp blast of alcohol, offers a rough imitation of the opening notes, and then disappears. If everything is gone within half an hour and leaves nothing behind, the concentration is almost certainly not what the label claims. No serious seller loses money on purpose. A designer eau de parfum offered at a fraction of its normal price, in unlimited quantity, is not a lucky find. Genuine discounts do exist for discontinued lines, older packaging, short-dated stock and unboxed testers, but they are limited, explained and never extreme.
Not Every Difference Means Fake
Perfumes are reformulated over the years, so an older bottle of the same name can genuinely smell different from a new one. Testers are real products in plain packaging. Travel sizes sometimes come with simpler caps. And the same fragrance behaves differently on dry skin, in high heat, or after being stored in a hot car. Rule these out before deciding you were cheated.

Buy from a seller who takes responsibility for what they ship. A clear return policy, a real address, a phone number that answers and a catalogue that makes sense are worth more than any single packaging detail.
