Winter in Egypt is not severe, but it is the season people complain most about dry skin, itchy shins, dark elbows and cracked heels. The weather alone is not the cause — the cause is that the routine never changed. This guide explains why body skin dries out in winter, gives you a clear four-step routine, and real picks from the Jmaloo body care range starting at 179 EGP.
Why your skin dries out in winter
Your skin has a natural lipid layer that holds water inside it. In winter three things attack that layer at the same time:
- Hot water. The biggest cause and the one nobody notices. A hot shower literally dissolves your natural oils, and that tight feeling afterwards is not cleanliness — it is dryness.
- Dry air. Humidity drops in winter and the air pulls moisture out of the skin. Heaters make it worse.
- Alkaline soap. Ordinary bar soap has a high pH and breaks down the skin barrier. A moisturising shower gel sits much closer to skin’s natural pH.
The result: itching, white flakes on the shins, and elbows and knees that look darker. All of it is fixable with a simple routine.
The four-step winter body routine
| Step | What it does | How often |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Cleanse | A moisturising shower gel instead of alkaline soap | Every shower |
| 2. Exfoliate | A scrub that clears dead skin so moisturiser can reach | Once a week |
| 3. Moisturise | Lotion or butter while the skin is still damp | Every shower, within 3 minutes |
| 4. Problem areas | Hand cream, and a heavy butter for elbows and heels | Daily and before bed |
1. Cleanse: drop the alkaline soap
The first and easiest change. Swap the bar for a moisturising shower gel and turn the temperature down — warm rather than hot, and a shorter shower. You will notice the difference within a week.

2. Exfoliate: once a week, no more
Dead skin forms a layer that stops moisturiser reaching the skin underneath. Weekly exfoliation clears it. But be careful: more than once a week damages the skin barrier and increases dryness — the exact opposite of what you want.
| Product | What it is | Size | Price (EGP) | Order |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| &honey Premium Body Scrub | A Japanese honey scrub for weekly exfoliation | — | 1,499 | Add to cart |
| Dr Teal’s Pure Epsom Salt – Lavender | A soak that eases muscles and softens skin | 100g | 199 | Add to cart |
3. Moisturise: the step most people get wrong
Applying lotion is not the point — when you apply it is. Put moisturiser on while the skin is still damp, within three minutes of the shower. Moisturiser works by sealing in the water already in your skin; wait until you are completely dry and you have sealed in nothing.
For the heavy areas — elbows, knees and heels — use a body butter rather than a lotion. The texture is thicker and it stays put for longer.
| Product | What it is | Size | Price (EGP) | Order |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hamidi Luxury Oud Body Lotion | A rich oriental lotion — the best value per ml | 500ml | 399 | Add to cart |
| Hamidi Luxury Oud Body Butter | A heavy butter for serious dryness, elbows and heels | 250ml | 399 | Add to cart |

| DOLCE MILK Wild Strawberry Body Milk | A light, fast-absorbing body milk | 200ml | 999 | Add to cart |
4. Hands, elbows and heels
Hands are washed ten times a day, so they dry first and get treated last. Keep one hand cream in your bag and one by the bed. Elbows and heels need a heavy butter before sleep — that is the best time, because skin absorbs better overnight.

| UNICORNS APPROVE Pina Colada Hand Cream | Coconut and pineapple hand cream | — | 299 | Add to cart |

Body mist: why it lasts longer in winter
Body mists get accused of not lasting — true in summer. Winter is a different story: moisturised skin holds scent, and heavier clothing keeps it there. The correct order is shower gel, lotion, then mist. It also works under a fragrance if you want more longevity — we covered that in detail in our winter perfume guide.
| Product | What it is | Size | Price (EGP) | Order |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Victoria’s Secret Bare Vanilla Mist | Sweet vanilla — the best seller | 250ml | 999 | Add to cart |
| Victoria’s Secret Amber Cafe Oud Mist | Amber, coffee and oud — properly wintery | 250ml | 999 | Add to cart |
Five mistakes that make skin drier
- Long hot showers. The biggest cause of winter dryness. Warm water and ten minutes is enough.
- Lotion on fully dry skin. You lose half the benefit. Apply while still damp.
- Daily exfoliation. It breaks the skin barrier and increases sensitivity. Once a week.
- Ignoring the back and shins. The areas that dry the most and get forgotten the most.
- Heavily scented products on irritated skin. If there is itching or redness, use something simple until it calms down.
A note: if dryness comes with thick scaling, strong redness or persistent itching, that may be eczema or another skin condition that needs a dermatologist. Cosmetic products moisturise, but they are not a medical treatment.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best body lotion for winter in Egypt?
For ordinary dryness, Hamidi Luxury Oud Body Lotion 500ml at 399 EGP gives the most product for the money. For serious dryness, elbows and heels, use the 250ml body butter at 399 EGP. If you want the scent to linger, the Victoria’s Secret lotions at 999 EGP.
When exactly should I apply lotion?
Within three minutes of leaving the shower, while skin is still damp. This doubles the benefit, because the product seals in water already in the skin rather than sitting on a dry surface.
How often should I exfoliate?
Once a week is enough in winter. Frequent exfoliation damages the skin barrier and increases both dryness and sensitivity.
Why are my elbows and knees darker?
Usually a build-up of dead skin and chronic dryness in areas that get friction. Weekly exfoliation plus a heavy butter daily visibly improves it over a few weeks. If nothing changes at all, see a dermatologist.
Is shower gel really better than soap?
For dry skin, yes. Traditional bar soap is alkaline and strips natural oils, while a moisturising shower gel is closer to skin pH and leaves a conditioning layer behind.
Can a body mist replace perfume?
Not a replacement, but a layer. A mist is lighter and fades faster, yet it is excellent under a fragrance or on its own for work and the gym — and it lasts noticeably longer in winter than in summer.
